What is Therapeutic Phlebotomy?
Therapeutic phlebotomy is a physician-ordered medical procedure in which a prescribed amount of blood is removed from the body. Although the collection process is similar to donating blood, therapeutic phlebotomy is performed as part of a patient’s medical treatment.
Removing blood can help reduce excess red blood cells, lower hematocrit levels, or decrease excess iron, depending on the patient’s diagnosis and physician’s treatment plan.
Therapeutic phlebotomy may be prescribed for conditions such as polycythemia vera, hereditary hemochromatosis, secondary erythrocytosis/polycythemia, including elevated red blood cell levels associated with testosterone replacement therapy, and certain other conditions when ordered by the treating provider.

Before every therapeutic phlebotomy procedure, our patients undergo a mini-physical and pre-procedure assessment to help determine whether it is appropriate to proceed with the scheduled collection.
The assessment may include review of the physician’s order and relevant medical history, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation, and other appropriate pre-procedure measurements. Hemoglobin and/or hematocrit may also be assessed when required by the physician’s order or established protocol.
During the procedure, the prescribed amount of blood is monitored during the collection while the patient is monitored for tolerance. After collection, appropriate post-procedure monitoring and instructions are provided.
